The Letter A
Overview: This curriculum focuses on introducing one letter per week. It covers uppercase and lowercase recognition. It includes phonetic awareness of initial sounds. Letter formation and vocabulary expansion are also part of the curriculum. Each week consists of a variety of interactive activities to reinforce learning.
WEEK ONE: Letter A
- Focus: Uppercase ‘A’ and lowercase ‘a’
- Activities:
- Letter recognition and identification (A/a)
- Tracing practice for uppercase and lowercase ‘A/a’ (with accompanying apple image)
- Dot-to-dot activity: “ANT”
- Initial sound identification: Colouring objects that start with ‘A’ (e.g., apple, ant, airplane)
- Vocabulary building & tracing practice: Words starting with ‘A’ (Ant, Apple, Arm, Ask, Art, Air)
- Story reflection: Identifying a favourite word starting with ‘A’
Week 1 — Letter A
- 30–40 min sequence
- Warm up (3 min): A sound chant + gesture.
- Visual/model (5): Show large A; air tracing.
- Tactile (6): Form A with playdough or finger in sand.
- Workbook tracing (7): A tracing lines (Week 1 page).
- Phonics sorting (6): “Colour everything that starts with A”.
- Dot‑to‑dot & colour (5): ant/connect‑the‑dots.
- Read‑aloud & response (4): short A story; child names/writes favourite A word on the prompt.

- Workbook Week 1 pages, crayons, pencil, playdough/sand tray, dot markers.
