The Letter S

  • Objectives
    • Recognize uppercase S and lowercase s.
    • Identify initial S sound in simple words.
    • Practice pre-writing strokes and letter formation; color S-items.
  • Activities (30–40 min)
    • Warm-up (5 min): Air/large arm S-shape trace.
    • Letter tracing & formation (10 min): Workbook large letters (pgs 3–5) — guided finger trace then pencil.
    • Phonics & vocabulary (10 min): Read word list on pg 8. The list includes words like sun, sit, sad, see, six, and sea. Practice the initial sound game by finding objects that start with S.
    • Fine motor/color & dot-to-dot (10–15 min): Color items that start with S (pg 7) and complete seahorse dot-to-dot (pg 6).
    • Reflection/writing (5–10 min): “Time to read a story” sentence/prompt (pg 9) — draw or write favourite S-word.
  • Materials
    • Workbook pages 3–9, crayons, pencils, big paper for air-writing.
  • Assessment
    • Observe stroke direction & letter shape (note: correct start point, control).
    • Check worksheet completion: colouring selections, traced words.
    • Record whether your child can name 3 S-words independently.
